Learn to Play

Taking the Ice

The crisp air. The sound of skate blades carving the ice. The smell of the gear.

Nothing beats ice hockey.

And it’s never too late to learn.

While Wayland hockey players come together as teammates starting with the middle and high school teams supported by the WHA, most players drop the puck on their ice hockey careers years earlier.

A great place to start is with Learn to Skate or Learn to Play Hockey sessions offered by area rinks and youth hockey organizations. From there, most youth organizations offer a developmental House League program that feeds into their town travel teams, which compete in the Valley Hockey League and its rinks throughout MetroWest and Greater Boston. Some players also choose to tryout for club teams, which generally cater to a more elite playing level and, in exchange, involve greater time and travel commitments.

New to hockey? Please consider the WHA a resource to help families get to know the hockey scene. Check out the links below and reach out anytime to info@waylandhockey.org to arrange a helpful conversation.

Youth Programs

The WHA is not affiliated with any of the programs below. However, a high percentage of our members launch their ice hockey experience with one of the following youth hockey organizations in neighboring towns.

Adult Leagues

Hockey is a lifelong sport.

Several adult leagues in our area cater to a variety of skillsets, ranging from total beginner to high-level, former collegiate athletes.

WHA is not affiliated with the following programs, but many Wayland school team alumni and other Wayland residents play in these leagues.
